What will power your car in 2022 (if you still own one)?

When Tony Seba, Stanford University lecturer and Silicon Valley entrepreneur, talks about the future of energy and transport he’s talking about 2022 (not 2050, or beyond). If he’s right we are about to experience significant clean energy disruption in the next few years, thanks partly to the convergence of multiple technologies.

In 2007 then CEO of Microsoft, Steve Ballmer was quoted as saying “There’s no chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share. No chance…”

You may have dismissed solar; we’ve been reading about it’s potential for years. Tony reminds us that technology adoption is not linear; once a technological or economic tipping point is reached, it grows exponentially. Efficient and cheap storage of electricity is combining will significant advances in solar technology to drive (my apologies) disruption in transportation.

Regardless of whether you believe your next car will be powered by electricity, hydrogen (or Google for that matter), this presentation is insightful and engaging. Make yourself a cup of tea and settle in for the hour (it’s no short sound-bite). The future in energy and transportation is here.
